Disconnection vs. Abolishment: Why the Difference Matters More Than You Think

Most homeowners who electrify think leaving gas is a single step. Turn it off, move on. In reality, there are two very different options — and choosing the right one is important.

On 2nd April 2026, the Australian Energy Market Commission finalised Australia's first national framework for permanently exiting the gas network. It's a regulatory update that hasn't made many headlines, but for anyone planning to electrify, it changes the landscape in a meaningful way.

Here's the difference that most people miss. A disconnection temporarily stops gas flowing to your property — but the infrastructure stays in place. In many cases, daily supply charges keep appearing on your bill long after the last burner has been switched off. It looks like an exit and move forward... but it isn't.

Abolishment is the full exit. The meter is removed from your property and the pipework is capped, and gas cannot return to the property. It's permanent, and it's the only way to completely stop paying for a network you're no longer using. It also reinforces to the gas companies that they are losing customers. A disconnection is still a potential customer to the gas companies.

Until now, the rules around abolishment were inconsistent and pricing was unclear. Homeowners were often left chasing quotes with little idea of what they were actually paying for. The new framework fixes that — gas distributors will be required to publish upfront capped pricing, approved by the Australian Energy Regulator, so you know the cost before you commit.

The rollout happens in stages from late 2026, so you may not see it reflected immediately when you make an enquiry. But the direction is set.

For anyone mid-way through an electrification project or about to start one, it's worth understanding which path you're on — and making sure you're actually saying goodbye to gas, not just pausing it.
